A DAUGHTER OF DIASPORA
Finalist and Winner of the 2018 Kudos Awards 'Highly Commendable' prize.
This piece is an experimental booklet on my experiences as an immigrant child. It is a reflection of how my life has been cleaved in half: belonging to neither here nor there. The book was created by first writing the prose for the book - this was undoubtedly the most difficult part. I found a stash of old patterns in my late grandmother’s belongings. Using these clothing patterns, I cut them into smaller pieces and like a flimsy jigsaw puzzle, I sewed them into leaflets. I created the graphics on Photoshop for each page as an illustration for the prose, finally printing them on transfer paper. Using heat, I pressed the graphics onto the thin paper leaves and then added the prose. Lastly, I bound the book together with silk embroidery thread and mango wood twigs.
